So, you’re thinking about fertilizing your lawn?
One of the most frequently asked questions at the store is: “Is it time to fertilize my grass?”
As of March 30, 2015 – NO.
Why You Should Wait
To get full benefit from fertilizer, your grass should be about 70% green before application.
Think of it this way: how much do you eat while you’re asleep? Your grass is still “sleeping” and just beginning to wake up. Fertilizing early does not help grass green up faster. Based on typical spring weather patterns, mid-April is usually the right time to start.
What Fertilizer Should You Use?
Centipede
- 8-4-16 with 2% iron
- Fertilize mid-April only
- For summer green-up, use Ironite
Bermuda
- 16-4-8
- Fertilize every 5–6 weeks during the growing season (April–September)
- One application may be replaced with 34-0-0 (straight Nitrogen) for extra green
Zoysia
- 16-4-8
- Follow the same schedule as Bermuda
St. Augustine
- 16-4-8
- Apply once in late April
Timing matters. Let your grass wake up first, then feed it properly for the best results.
